I hope that most readers of this blog will have recognized the role that Fox News has had on the beliefs that are widely held by Americans. I have written before about the percentage of people that still believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. I decided I couldn’t stomach popular media sometime back in 2001. Fox News was a big reason for that. They were a huge proponent of attacking Iraq (with or without evidence), and spread their fear-mongering on the public airwaves. Well, it looks like they’re at it again.
See Fox Attacks Iran for a comparison of the scary sound bites that are polluting the airwaves. The video compares “news” reports about Iraq in 2004 with those being used today to create sentiment against Iran in 2007. One of the most striking aspects to me is that these statements are almost completely devoid of factual information and data. Rather, they prey upon peoples’ emotions and fears by showing screaming people touting doomsday prophecies. The introduction highlights the impact:
I remember very clearly the daily fearmongering led by FOX as they cheered for war with Iraq. The 24/7 images, sound effects, yelling and threatening were an ever-present drumbeat for war. We had to invade, and we had to invade now.. anyone who didn’t see that was a traitor. They viciously attacked those of us who worked to get out the truth.
You’d think that with the complete failure in Iraq, those days would be behind us. Sadly, you’d be wrong.
FOX wants war with Iran.
It’s almost too ridiculous to believe, but it’s shockingly real. We’ve already compiled over 4 hours of FOX footage just in the last few months… the same images, sound effects, yelling and threatening that led the U.S. to invade Iraq is happening right now to sell a war with Iran. They are saying the exact same things!!
With this kind of reporting, it’s no wonder that the United States is one of the most violent nations in the world. I hope that people will somehow recognize that Fox News is the intellectual equivalent of tabloid magazines. Of course, it has the potential to harm far more lives.
