Scary Bible Quotes

For those that believe in the literal truth of the Bible (a large percentage of Americans, by most measures), this page on Scary Bible Quotes should be enlightening.  The Christian Bible has never been at a loss for bigotry, racism, sexism, or just plan old-fashioned violence.  God, apparently, is all-powerful but not above being jealous, vindictive and capricious.

I found it entertaining that the authorship of the page is attributed to God (as quoted in the Bible).  However, be sure to read the Introduction by editor Michael Huemer.  The Q & A provides links for viewing the passages in context.  My favorite: In response to the common question “I hate you”, Huemer responds:

All of the hostile messages I have received about Scary Bible Quotes appear to be from Christians. If you genuinely believe the Bible is the word of God, you should be happy, not angry, that I am helping to spread the word of God. If, on the other hand, you think that my page is anti-Christian, then that seems to me a tacit admission that some of the statements in the Bible are so difficult to believe that merely reproducing a collection of them serves to undermine Christianity.

Fortunately, most Christians seem to follow only those teachings that are congruent with their own ambitions and prejudices.  Perhaps one should no longer quote The Good Book

The best part is, they can’t be in any better context. if you have read the bible, which ive a feeling you dont very much, you would know that verses (especially in the old testament) stand on their own and mostly just relate to the same subject. look up the quotes.

“Hmm… quotes need to be used in their proper context.”

-Why would one need to put something like Exodus 35:2 (first example I saw on a very long list) into context? What possible context could justify or at least even come close to making such an action permissible?
-Are we then asked to just simply cherry pick which ones to comply with and which ones to dismiss as “old fashioned” or “outdated traditions”? Isn’t that a slap in the face of God? “Dear lord, I follow your every word… except this one… and this one… and this one… and this one… and kill my own son? Nah.. and this one…”

OK “Ed”, tell me how to non-literally interpret Deuteronomy’s statement that those with mangled testicles are unable to ascend to heaven? By “balls” does god here refer to “courage”, like some sort of crude frat-bro? One of many examples. You’re not interpreting the bible metaphorically, your just not interpreting the parts you dislike.

Few Americans take the bible literally. I have always been an Atheist and have discussed religion with hundreds of people both young and old and I can guarantee that despite statistics, few Christians have a literal interpretation of the bible.

I truly wonder if “The Bible isn’t taken literally” or “The Bible is not supposed to be taken literally” is truly a defense for the religious. If so, that’s a pathetic defense. That’s a delicate way of saying “Our scripture has no credibility so we make spot-on interpretations, and occasionally just ween out some of the REALLY bad stuff”.

    • AtypicalGuy said,

      October 31, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Nick: I agree. You’d think that the supreme creator of the Universe would be a better writer. Though in just about all of his supposed teaching, there’s room for misinterpretation. And it’s clear that the stakes are high: You could suffer an eternity of torture if you don’t follow his instructions. A supreme being would clearly have the ability to predict how and when people would misunderstand his words. Most peer-reviewed books and journals face much more scrutiny. I’d ask people who think that they need to edit, censor, revise, or interpret their God’s words, why their deity couldn’t do a better job in the first place. There are areas (such as law and in fiction) where there are clear benefits of ambiguity; but when supposed eternal salvation is at stake, I’d expect more from an all-powerful and human-loving being.

The bible is the inspired word of God.God has given all of us freewill to believe in him or not,it is entirely our choice.Be extremely careful though before you abuse and belittle something which ultimately will be revealed is the absolute truth, don’t be so quick to throw away your chance of life. The fact that alot of the people on this site are so unbelievably angry speaks volumes, if it’s all nonsense why are you even on this site wasting your time writing about it and what is there to get so upset about? It is also quite arrogant to think you are here just by chance and everything you see around you and your body that is so finely designed should be the result of “the big bang” if it wasn’t for the gift of God you wouldn’t be able to even draw your next breath! we are nothing without him.

    • bob said,

Firstly, by not wasting my time every Sunday, I have gained a seventh of my one and only life.
Secondly, the things around us have not come about by ‘chance’ but are the result millions of years of natural selection. The fact that you think that the evolution of humans was chance, shows how little you have read into alternative theories. Not that you could ever call intelligent design a theory.
Thirdly, isn’t it a bit arrogant to believe that humans are the one and only life in the universe, and that earth is the center of the entire universe, even when we can see millions of other galaxies out there?

  22. tony said,

    January 14, 2011 at 11:24 am

    Hey Melanie
I suppose you personally spoke to god. How else would you know what he thinks….or is it because you believe what others told you.
A few of us think for ourselves rather than blindly follow.

There are many things we don’t know about the Bible but it is the things we do know that should give one great concern.

Many of the apparent contradictions that have been mentioned disappear when studied in the light of the entire body of scripture. If God is God, and knows all; and is wise beyond our understanding, then there are things we will not be able to understand; just as children do not understand all that their parents say and do… but then they get older and little by little they understand why their parents did and said the things they did. So it is with those who are children of God. It takes time to understand the things of the Creator and the deep things of God and why certain things are in the bible.
Keep in mind that in Luke 24:25, it says that Jesus had to “open the minds” of even His disciples so they could understand the scriptures concerning Himself (in the old Testament). Has your mind been opened? If not, be careful what you do and say about Him and His word.

As to apparent contradictions I will use the following example that was quoted above:
Genesis 32:30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and my life was preserved.”
Exodus 33:11 The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend.
John 1:18 No one has ever seen God.

Jewish tradition has held that to see God would mean certain death: no one could be in the awesome presence of God: the power, energy, light and terror would be too much to survive. In Exodus 33:20 God says: “no one can see me and live”…: (see Ex 33: 19-21) But who is it who is speaking? I contend that it is God the Father saying that. But in Exodus 33:11, who is it who is speaking with Moses? I contend that it is God the Son; Jesus in His pre-incarnate form. The same God who walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the day Genesis 3:8. It is He, before he was born in Bethlehem who was able to come to man and woman and let Himself be known…. And also in many other places in the bible…. Read Judges chapter 6 where an apparent angel all of a sudden is given the Identity of THE LORD. (verse 16) and then He says: basically: “relax, you are not going to die”. “I am the “angel” of the Lord”: the appearance of the LORD. (whom I contend is Jesus Christ: who also said in John 8:58: “before Abraham was born, “I AM”. (Abraham lived about 2000 years before Jesus time) We all know that when God spoke from the burning bush He told Moses that his name was I AM),

But this is all just a tiny portion of what is in that Book, the Bible. Just a taste of the amazing stuff that I have studied for over 30 yrs now: and I have not lost my sense of wonder over it. There is alot of very cool stuff in there. Don’t just kick it aside. It could be a matter of eternal life or death.

Yes, God has a Son: Look at Psalm 2:12. It says: “Kiss His Son” or “do homage to His Son”, or He will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction” …… “Blessed are all who take Refuge in Him”

Yes, take refuge in His Son, the Lord: Jesus Christ.

Being a pagan I find christians to be one of the most two-faced bigoted people on the planet. and more people have been killed in the name of the christian god than any other god(s) in history. one example. “thou shalt not suffer a witch to live”.

Not to mention Leviticus 19:19 which forbids you to wear two types of material woven together.

Leviticus is a great place to start reading the bible to prove it is basically a code of laws to subjugate a group of people, particularly women. This theme continues through the book and reaches its pinnacle in Paul’s letters.

I pray you find Jesus before it is too late. All truth is in trusting in Jesus. It is all summed up by Jesus himself in John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him I am the way the truth & the life no one cometh to the father but by me. If I am wrong I have lost nothing If you are wrong you have lost every thing. So Sad

    • AtypicalGuy said,

Carey: Assuming you’re really concerned about my future in the afterlife, it’s sad that the best you can do is pray. It seems to me that a god who wanted to be believed (and would punish those who didn’t for all eternity) could do a better job of providing some evidence for his/her existence. Your appeal is a common one, and is often referred to as Pascal’s Wager. It is generally considered to be discredited, partially for reasons that are referred to as the Atheist’s Wager. I’ll stick to truth, logic, reason, and evidence for my one and only life. If that means that some mythical creature will punish me in the future, I still think it would be the better option.

“If I am wrong I have lost nothing If you are wrong you have lost every thing.” That has to be the worst argument for believing in God. If you are a believer simply to double down then I doubt your “God” would appreciate that.
I am so tired Cafeteria Christians. Does anybody think that their religion is based primarily on what part of the world and which era they happened to be born in???
ANd lastly, If anyone can believe there were 2 of EVERY animal on the same boat…..or there was a talking snake… or Noah lived to be HUNDREDS of years old…. I have no words for you.

Great comment about how, reproducing the Bible undermines Christianity!
I’m continually amazed at how much more I seem to know about this crazey book than my Christian coworkers. If I thought this creation myth were the key to my universe (witch I don’t) I would certianly read it a heck of a lot more than they do.
Perhaps its preciscly their reluctance to read or study anything that makes this document so awe inspiring to them. This may be why they are so willing to let others interpret it for them as well.
