Scary Bible Quotes

For those that believe in the literal truth of the Bible (a large percentage of Americans, by most measures), this page on Scary Bible Quotes should be enlightening.  The Christian Bible has never been at a loss for bigotry, racism, sexism, or just plan old-fashioned violence.  God, apparently, is all-powerful but not above being jealous, vindictive and capricious.

I found it entertaining that the authorship of the page is attributed to God (as quoted in the Bible).  However, be sure to read the Introduction by editor Michael Huemer.  The Q & A provides links for viewing the passages in context.  My favorite: In response to the common question “I hate you”, Huemer responds:

All of the hostile messages I have received about Scary Bible Quotes appear to be from Christians. If you genuinely believe the Bible is the word of God, you should be happy, not angry, that I am helping to spread the word of God. If, on the other hand, you think that my page is anti-Christian, then that seems to me a tacit admission that some of the statements in the Bible are so difficult to believe that merely reproducing a collection of them serves to undermine Christianity.

Fortunately, most Christians seem to follow only those teachings that are congruent with their own ambitions and prejudices.  Perhaps one should no longer quote The Good Book

Just read the quotes and many are taken out of their context.

I agree with what you’re saying totally – all I can say is that way too many people take the bible literally… but then the majority of Christians haven’t even read the Bible!

Great site! The sooner we leave the dark ages of religion behind the better.

religion is not a lie because its not religion you have a problem with but the stupid people who believe it and the smart people who benefit from the stupid people and then there are the annoying stupid people who think creationism is real religion is not a lie some of the information and beliefs religion displays are lies.

“Hmm… quotes need to be used in their proper context.”

-Why would one need to put something like Exodus 35:2 (first example I saw on a very long list) into context? What possible context could justify or at least even come close to making such an action permissible?
-Are we then asked to just simply cherry pick which ones to comply with and which ones to dismiss as “old fashioned” or “outdated traditions”? Isn’t that a slap in the face of God? “Dear lord, I follow your every word… except this one… and this one… and this one… and this one… and kill my own son? Nah.. and this one…”

OK “Ed”, tell me how to non-literally interpret Deuteronomy’s statement that those with mangled testicles are unable to ascend to heaven? By “balls” does god here refer to “courage”, like some sort of crude frat-bro? One of many examples. You’re not interpreting the bible metaphorically, your just not interpreting the parts you dislike.

Few Americans take the bible literally. I have always been an Atheist and have discussed religion with hundreds of people both young and old and I can guarantee that despite statistics, few Christians have a literal interpretation of the bible.
